about

live cassette recorded by Mike Bell - with Ed Wilcox-drums, vocals, harmonica / Leslie Q-bass, vocals / Mike Bell-guitar / Jim Flagg-violin / Lora Bloom-synth, vocals
"I drove down by myself to Nashville a day early to beat a snowstorm coming through Virginia and got myself a hotel room, then checked out some pawnshops, then visited my friend Bridget at her job at Wild Oats health food store, and got some snacks for the days ahead. When I got back to the hotel I ordered a pizza, and on my way to pick it up was terrorized by a carload of rednecks who chased me and tried to run me down as I walked across the K-Mart parking lot, until the outdoor security guard drew his gun and chased them off. Spent the rest of the evening writing songs, some of which ended up on the "Calling St Cecilia" cd, and "live at the Underground". The next day I hung out downtown on "honky-tonk row" and did some shopping at Earnest Tubbs Record store on Broadway before heading over to the gig. Lot's of people were there thanks to a "pick" in the "Nashville Scene", including some friends from the International Noise Conference in Miami a few nights before. I gave Ed a big stack of our free tour giveaway cd's, and Leslie caused a big scene in the middle of the bar, calling them bootlegs (that Ed had paid for!), and I split until soundcheck and hung out across the street in the park by the Parthenon. After soundcheck I was hanging out waiting for the show to start, and one of the locals who was hanging around playing pool told me "some chick is messing with your guitar", and it turned out to be Leslie, who had completely untuned my Danelectro, and when I approached her she threw it down, and broke the plastic strap lock on the body, which I didn't notice until I put the guitar on when we took the stage and the strap came off. The show started with me duct taping my strap to the body (still holding up 16 years later!), and then tuning up by ear during the first couple songs, which are not on the tape. After our set the guys playing pool came up to me and told me "We ain't never heard guitar playing like that before" and offered to buy me some beers and shoot some pool with them, which I politely declined. I left immediately after packing up, missing "Sword Heaven" and "the Dynamite Operators", but glad I had my own car and hotel room." - Mike Bell 10/11/2020
