"I left Nashville in the afternoon for the drive up I-65 to Loiusville, stopping along the way in Cave City, Kentucky, where I checked out a huge outdoor flea market, then went to Dinosaur World, where I ran into the guys in "Sword Heaven", who were touring and in the same van as "16 Bitch Pile-Up". After some walking around and taking pictures of each other being attacked by dinosaurs I headed out, and stopped at Mike's Rock Shop (they sold rocks and crystals from the nearby caves) on the way to the show. On the outskirts of Louisville I passed a swanky supper-club and saw that Leon Russell was playing there that night. I seriously contemplated blowing off my own gig for a chance to see him play, but thought the better of it and drove on. The show, was in the absolutely worst part of town, in a punk rock squat next to a crack house, in a neighborhood patrolled by a gang of skinheads and their pit bulls. I checked in with my bandmates, and then spent the time until the show in my car smoking weed with Jim Flagg, with my gear safely out of Leslie's reach. Parked just across the street from the crack-house, we watched all the action and drama that regularly spilled out onto the street, confident that we wouldn't even be noticed if the cops came by, which they did a couple times while we were there. A great show with Keenan Lawler as the opening act, and he also let us stay at his apartment that night, where he played us some rare tapes of him playing with Rhys Chatham in NYC in the 80s." - Mike Bell 10/10/2020
